Johnson's Reconstruction plan:
Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the U.S. Andrew Johnson decided to make a reconstruction plan like the one Abraham Lincoln started. Former Confederates were pardoned and the state governments were restored.

Black Codes:

According to the book "America Pathways To the Present" Black Codes are " Laws that restricted freedmen's rights(206). The white men would use the freedmen's as slaves but would pay them. Freedmen's right were still low even if they are no more slaves. He are some examples of how they would kind of treat freemen's as slaves.

" Curfews- Generally, black people could not gather after sunset.
Vagrancy laws- Freedmen convicted of vagrancy- that is, noy working-could be fined, whipped, or sold for a year's labor.
Larbor contracts- Freedment had to sign agreements in January for a year work. Those who quit in the middle of a contract often lost all the wages they had earned.

Land restrictions- Freed people could rent land or homes only in rural areas. This restrictions forced them to live on plantations." (206)

14th & 15th Amendment:
In June 1866, Congress passed a Civil Rights Act that outlawed the Black Codes, which made all people Equally protected . The 15th amendment made the Freedmen equal to the white men by having the right to vote. This Amendment was ratified March 1870.

Radical Reconstruction:

A small group of people who were against the Johnson's reconstruction policies. They were also againt The Black codes. Their main goal was to make give Freedmen civil rights.

Carpetbagger:

A name given to North American Rebulicans that moved to the south. A carpetbagger was a type of cheap suitcase that was made of carpet Scraps.

Scalawags:

Name given to Southern White republicans. This wrod came from Scottish meaning Scrawny Cattle. Most of these people were very poor.
